Calistoga Ranch, Napa Valley, California
An Auberge Resort.
Member of “The Leading Small Hotels of the World".
Our love of wine (and food!) took us to Napa Valley, preceded by several extremely enjoyable days in San Francisco. We wanted to stay in Napa (rather than Sonoma) because our wine preferences were there.
It was easier choosing wine tours than it was choosing our accommodation. After sourcing from The Wine Spectator, doing research online, checking hotel web sites, and calling top picks to ask a few questions… I made the decision to stay five nights at Calistoga Ranch. I chose Calistoga Ranch over Auberge du Soleil (a sister property) because of a few guest comments online and my instinct after calling both properties.
Superlatives For This Leading Luxury Resort
My husband and I chose a suite with outdoor living space after discussing the options thoroughly with guest services. We were not disappointed. As we drove up, they came out to greet us by names. We didn't have time enough to open our own car doors, they were helping us out of the car, taking luggage out of the trunk, offering us a cool drink, and asking about our trip in. No registration process, all was taken care of. We went directly to our room where (somehow!) our luggage arrived before we did. All was placed perfectly… even our hand tote for toiletries was placed in the bathroom!
Our accommodation was large living quarters with indoor/ outdoor spaces. We were given a suite that had a huge tree growing through the deck. Gorgeous! Everything was impecccably clean (even in areas guests don’t normally look!), with quality furnishings and well appointed with quality items just like home. Our entire "living quarters" smelled wonderfully fresh. A two-sided indoor/outdoor gas fireplace was romantic in keeping the chill night air out.
Towels and robes were beyond plush, bathroom amenities were full size, top class, and plentiful. Bed linens were decadent and the bed heavenly. His and her bathrooms running along either side of a huge soaking tub made grooming a delight. Best of all, an amazing elephant head outdoor shower was exhilarating and romantic… who can argue with standing in your own large shower “room" that opens to the evening stars or morning mist. A tree grew in the centre of it and a lounge chair occupied a cozy corner.
Service was very attentive, always discreet, and without attitude (very important). Staff met our every need before we knew we had a need. I knew this was to be a very special place when I read a guest comment before we left that hotel staff had brought their car around and turned on the air conditioning so the car would be cool before they left for their day in wine country. Now that’s service and corporate class!
As we were checking out, I noticed a brochure at the front desk for a property called Esperanza in Los Cabos, Mexico. Turning the brochure over to study the details more closely, I was told it was another Auberge property. Staff assured me if we loved Calistoga Ranch, we'd not be disappointed with their property in Mexico. As my husband and I drove off, I was already planning our trip to Esperanza
